It was finally a sunny day in Shanghai. After a delicious pancake breakfast my housemates and I went for a wander into the French Concession to an Austrian cafe for a coffee. The coffee was pretty bad, but I wasn’t expecting too much. Even the double shot didn’t mask the taste of the way too sweet soy milk and I’m almost certain it was burnt.
Thankfully the sun was out, so we wandered through a small garden and sat down amongst the locals. Some of the elderly Chinese people all sit along the park benches, knitting or chatting away, whilst the others form small circles and play rather intense games of cards. There is a real strong of community in the older generations. They love to talk, love to eat together and enjoy the outdoors no matter what the weather. But when the sun is out I feel happier and perhaps that makes their presence not only more enjoyable but also comforting.
