China is filled to the brim with Chinese tourists. I feel like this country is about to spill over the edge at any minute. Every temple, tomb and tower has a line that disappears into the haze. The tour groups are colour coded, the photographs are identical. One after the other they stand in front of the monument, expressionless, and snap a photo.
It’s never quiet, unless you manage to get off the beaten track by walking in stead of taking the fast buses to and from each historic landmark. However, the effort is worth it, and for a moment you can hear silence, and even breathe a little easier. A top the highest point of a temple you can look down and each person becomes but a speck. Back on the ground that silence is replaced with microphones and the slow scuffle of thousands of feet. The days spent in the hectic city is worth the minute of quiet, it is all the more special.
